How Culinary School Benefits Your Career

By Shawn Cutler

We have a lot of aspiring chefs in the United States of America. Many men and women have dreams of one day opening their own restaurant, bakery or catering company. However, is paying for a culinary school education worth the money? We always hear all of the hype about how expensive school is becoming. The federal government seems to have no problem lending thousands of dollars to students that want to use $50,000 or more on their education. Many schools today claim that they can train you to become a chef. However, are these claims true?

It is important to learn more about managing people, food and menus. When you prepare for a role as a chef, you need lots of practice. Culinary school programs are often six months to 4 years. During this time, you learn about catering, preparing foods for large groups of people and creating fancy eye appealing dishes. Culinary school can often cost you between $10,000 to $200,000. It all depends on the school that you go to. Many culinary schools have good names. The French Culinary Institute is a name that most chefs in the industry recognize. It is a school that demands perfection from its students. Many graduates from this school go on to get good jobs and work as leaders in the industry. What can you learn in culinary school though?

Culinary school can offer you a good way to learn about food. Schools like the Culinary Institute of America have great culinary programs. The students that graduate from there often go on to having good jobs and spots on television. The CIA is known for its culinary expertise and fancy catering. Students with a 4 year bachelor's degree can often land top jobs in only a couple of years out of school. This means that employers are impressed with a graduate from this school. However, not everyone can get accepted into the CIA. Most people cannot afford the tuition. It is considered the Harvard Education of the culinary field.

Culinary school is also a time in which many people say that they are learning about food preparation. Most culinary students say that they are tired of waiting to become a chef. However, if you are 20 something hears old, it's hard to get a restaurant to give you control over a kitchen worth over $500,000. Often, your education will show that you are mature enough to get through a program and work hard on menus and preparation of food. It is important to show your expert skills in the culinary field.

Many business owners like Amy from Amy's Bread in NYC got a culinary education before starting their own business. She graduated from the New York Restaurant School and did rather well for herself. She has been featured on several television shows and I think that she has the best bread in the United States. It is extremely fancy and delicious artisan style bread. Workers that do not attend culinary school often spend a few years in the industry before getting promoted to a sous chef or head chef position. Some people spend a lifetime in the industry without ever advancing beyond a line cook.
