Choosing The Right Egg Substitute For Vegans

By Donald Cook

It is nothing new that in the last years there has been an increase in the number or vegans and vegan products. You can now find almost everything vegan at your supermarket and they are really good. But if you prefer to make things at home and select your ingredients more carefully, or baking is one of your passions, you may have found yourself in need of an egg substitute for vegans.

Well the best part is that there are so many vegan options and replacements that you can create practically any favorite food you had as non-vegan. For egg substitutes you will need to check a few of them and see which one suits best your cooking style or taste. All of them are super healthy and nutritional rich, and they will enrich your food.

One simple option is to use flaxseed meal, as it is easy to make and adds a lot of nutrition to your food. To substitute one egg, you would need to use mix 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal to 3 tablespoons of water and let it sit for around 5 minutes before using it.

Other seed based option is the one using chia seeds. You need to mix them same as above, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds or chia powder with 3 tablespoons of water. Let it sit for 5 minutes and it is ready to be used. Take into account that this mix would be a bit darker, so it is not advisable to be used for light colored goods.

Store-bought vegan egg replacements are also an option and they can be found online or in stores, depending where you live. Most of them will produce a mix with a lighter texture than the ones created with seeds. Some of these mixes are even gluten-free, but best read the ingredients and find the best one for you. Make sure to check the instructions on the package before and follow them closely to get the best outcome.

Another replacement would be to use some fruit puree. You may try using mashed pumpkin or sweet potatoes, avocado, bananas or butternut squash. Pear butter is also considered a good substitute, as well as unsweetened applesauce. Of course, the texture is different, and one would be better than the other based on the cake or cookie you need to make.

Now when you are thinking about which one to use take into account what kind of food you are prepping. Some have quite a strong flavor or color and may be unsuitable for all items. Applesauce is the most versatile one, as it is not too sweet and does not have a strong color. Mix the more colored ones with some chocolate or coffee and it should be all good and tasty.

With so many options to choose from, the next question would be the recipes you can use and great sweet vegan cakes that you can make. For example, there are a lot of cookies that you can make and incorporate your favorite fruit puree into them. Also, vegan muffins are everyone's favorite and will need fruit puree and flaxseeds. For a quick and healthy breakfast you can make various types of pancakes. Also, you may try your own combinations and discover great new recipes.
