By Jerry Clark

The northeast states of North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia are where one of the brightest collegiate conference operates. Generating much exposure for excellent athletes, it is a unique conference supported by media and major corporations. It is one with the destiny of African American higher education, having been founded in 1912 and the oldest conference of its kind.

CIAA is the acronym for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which has members in four states and currently 12 member schools in NCAA Division II. CIAA 2017 has some excitingly awaited annual events in college sports as well as socials, celebrations and shows for registered or paying audiences. Recently, the organization has signed up with startup network Bounce TV for coverage of sports events and championships.

It is perhaps the most unique and proud tradition related to freedom of education for African Americans and the drive for excellence in athletic sports. With major corporate sponsorships, the conference left its old home of Hampton, VA for Charlotte, NC in August 2015 where 8 of its members are located. It participates in 16 official sports in NCAA, 8 for men and another 8 for women.

Its members are a storied bunch that have valiantly fought the good fight for students as well as the general community of liberally educated men and women. These include Bowie State, Chowan U, Elizabeth City S. U., and Fayetteville State. Some more members are Johnson C. Smith U, Lincoln University and Livingstone College.

Rounding up the list of conference members are Shaw University, Virginia SU, Virginia Union University, Winston Salem State and Saint Augustine. With all the historical highs and lows, it is recognized as the one of the brightest stars in the NCAA, belonging to an area that has perhaps the most competitive conferences. To reiterate, great things are expected for 2017 for this league.

A great many people in the country have known it as a crown jewel in intercollegiate sports, having a unique and amazing value to sports. Since its transfer to Charlotte in North Carolina, a sports renaissance of sorts has come to blooming life in the city, gathering great numbers of excellent professional and amateur athletes in after event celebrations. Celebrities have thronged these events in record numbers, too.

Fan experience is always great here, and this can be had from website featuring the upcoming schedules for 2017. Many games are still being finalized, but the professional and college ball games will be there for the most loyal fans. Charlotte, of course, is the grand venue for the majority of events in 2017 CIAA Tournament.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected this year. There was a dramatic rise in the number of guests and fans last year and the coming year will probably register a new record. It has mostly been the work of conference organizers, member schools and players who have worked hard for the recognition as well as a truly memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance.

There are several official venues for the games, as there are many events being projected. There are games schedules for a couple of other arenas as there is an overflow of events. The major arena is still at the home Center, which also hosts professional games in the city of Charlotte.
