By Karina Frost

There are many things that make a person happy. For some, happiness is found with pets. Some need to be with friends or with family. Some go to distant places. Some derive it from just a quiet evening at home. For some, happiness can be found in food.

Food is essential for humans and animals alike. It provides nourishment to the body. Without it, a person will not have the energy for daily activities. But, aside from that, food is also a source of pleasure. For some, they do not just eat to live. They live to eat what is in season, trying out some of the seasonal recipes in a fun and very healthy way.

There are certain times in a year when a certain agricultural product is at its best. They abound in numbers, looking and tasting better after the other. Seasonality refers to this set period when the best foods are also at their most cost effective yet.

There are many good reasons why you should jump in the seasonal bandwagon. As aforementioned, eating what is in season is absolutely easy on the wallet. Because there is a high supply more than the number of demand, the said food comes cheaper than when you buy it another given time.

When the fruit is at peak, they also taste far better. Anything fresh always taste better, and will last really longer. When it is not in season, the taste is invariably affected as well. Locally harvested foods often have their whole flavors intact, which they also release in whole when eaten. Chilling them somehow takes some of the freshness away, which is often what is done when items are bought off peak.

They also provide you with variety. Having to eat the same thing over and over is very boring, not to mention less nutritious as compared to changing recipes every now and then. If you cannot grow one nearby, you can drive off to the most convenient farmers market.

They also provide you with good food without having to go really far. You can save gas from driving to the nearest grocery, and you will not be required to look presentable especially when your source is as convenient as the vegetable patch found in your own backyard. There is nothing like the feeling of eating what you have grown, too.

They are also healthier. Since they are backyard grown, they are safely organic. These then means that the produce is jam packed with nutrients without the added chemicals of commercial ones. This natural option is fast becoming the item of choice for many world renowned chefs.

There are indeed so many good things about eating naturally grown crops. You even help save the environment by favoring the natural method above others. When more and more people try out seasonal diets, then the use of pesticide and other synthetic methods that harm the earth will also die out.
