Understanding The Marine Corps League

By Krystal Branch

The Marine Corps League gained congressional approval under Title 36 of the United States Code in 1937 under the stewardship of Commandant Lejeune John. This happened during the 75th congress and under the guidance of President Roosevelt. It is supposed to deal with issues affecting veterans and Marines in active national service.

The team aims at ensuring the unity and fellowship of members and addressing any issue affecting active service men and veterans. They are mandated with preservation of the history and traditions of marines. There is a cross generational approach to these endeavors because membership is drawn from honorably discharged veterans and active marines. Their advocacy affects the two groups as well.

Members of MCL aim at voluntarily offering assistance to current marines, former marines, family member, orphans and widows who are in need. The nature of assistance is not limited. The organization also seeks to perpetuate the history of United States Marine by all means possible. They have made a commitment to mark all anniversaries and occasions that are of significant to the nature or working of marines. This group has grip on the past, present and future marines.

In keeping alive the traditions of Marines, they run various programs aimed at promoting and honoring their tradition and spirit. The Injured Marines program aims at helping those who are wounded in various hospitals across the country. There are naval and army hospitals in Virginia, Maryland, Washington and Texas. There is a Marine 4-life and Injured Marine Support program that mentors and supports those who are transitioning.

To capture the minds of young Americans at an early age, the youth program seeks to ensure that they understand and embrace the spirit of marines. This is possible through training and other programs targeting different institutions. The Boy Scouts of America is such an initiative as well as the fitness program for high and elementary schools. They have a scholarship fund to support education of needy families or relatives to veterans and toys for tots as part of their target activities.

Veteran benefits are a major concern for MCL with a lot of activities in this regard. The team works on all legislation that touch on marines or the military. The organization offers a platform for veterans to contribute in debates about national issues. Veterans Service Officer Program handles claims by marines in active services. Members volunteer to work in VA hospitals and clinics on regular basis.

The Military Order of the Devil Dogs is a fun and honor wing of the organization. It seeks to recognize outstanding services delivered by its members through award of different ranks. There is an auxiliary organization that operates alongside MCL in championing the issues of veterans and their dependents. There is a call to maintain faithfulness to the American spirit through her institutions.

Marine Corps League has offices in different cities to ease service delivery to its members. It offers a national platform for addressing veteran issues in a unified manner. They hold sacred the tradition, history and memory of marines and their service. Advocacy for the interest of veterans goes on in all sectors of life.
